Hair loss in women can in some cases be due to genetic factors. This is referred to as androgenic alopecia or female pattern hair loss (FPHL), and can occur from puberty onward. Up to 50% of women will be affected by hair loss due to genetic factors during their lifetime.
Hair loss in women can also be caused by a number of other factors, including:
- Hormonal imbalances or changes such as menopause
- Pregnancy & childbirth
- Dietary deficiencies
- Dermatologic conditions
- Medications, for example anti-cancer drugs
- Hair styling & chemical hair processing
